Has the media failed families with autism?

Finally someone with a loud national voice is speaking up about the media’s narrow focus on autism. Holly Robinson Peete just posted this great op-ed about the 8 most important things about autism that have been sadly overlooked.

For the last decade, the majority of the national conversation (not to mention money) has been spent on the vaccination debate, a fact that has truly hurt the millions of families living with autism.

Our client, our friends, two incredible parents with a 16-year-old-son with autism who founded the San Diego-based non-profit National Foundation for Autism Research (NFAR), is one of the few organizations that is actively funding programs and research to address many of the concerns that Holly raises - particularly adult transition programs, resources for high school & college students, job training & interview skill development, educational outreach to minority pediatricians, ways to reduce the financial burden of treatments on families, and much, much more.

NFAR’s annual Race for Autism
http://www.RaceForAutism.org is next weekend.

San Diego-based non-profit NFAR will continue to work to provide support for critical programs and the development of groundbreaking new resources - with or without a media spotlight. All of their funding comes from this annual Race and in only 5-years they have managed to raise & award nearly a half million dollars for the San Diego community – all with minimal media support. Can you imagine what they would be able to accomplish if the mainstream press was more engaged in the conversation?
